Policy on professors dating students
The integrity of the teacher-student relationship is the foundation of the University’s educational mission.
This relationship vests considerable trust in the teacher, who, in turn, bears authority and accountability as a mentor, educator, and evaluator.
A survey of Westchester colleges and universities revealed that no formal policies addressing faculty-student dating are in place, but many schools said that a prohibition against such relationships is implicit in other policies regulating professional conduct.
"We view this kind of relationship as inappropriate," said James Bryan, Dean of Students at Manhattanville College.
"Do I think it's wise for an 18-year-old to be involved with a 40-year-old? Many of the country's premier universities, including Yale and the University of California, prohibit faculty-student romance, with the penalty of possible termination for faculty who violate the policy. In reality, however, many relationships have imbalances in status, salary, age, attractiveness and other factors. Why, he asks, must the university legislate against them? These examples illustrate the application of this policy, which (as stated in II-5.3 above) applies only to relationships involving students. However, romantic and/or sexual relationships in other contexts may also be problematic and are governed by III-8 Conflict of Interest in Employment.
But administrators, professors and students alike say that the issue of faculty-student dating is a complex one.
